Since the time I came to Bangalore, I don't get to eat much fish. One main reason is we don't get fresh fish in Bangalore and the varieties of sea fish that we get here is too less. During my last trip to Goa in December, I only savoured on small fish and I actually denied big fish like seer fish. Velli or Anchovy is a small fish that I just love. They are very clean, less smell and extremely tasty.
My hubby spotted them in the local super market and came home with half kg of these. The only problem is cleaning them. The super store people normally clean and cut the fish. But they do not clean small fish like anchovies. But my hubby knows that I love this fish and so he surprised me with them. My hubby helped me by cleaning all of them to the mark of perfection :) Soon after this I started my experiments and cooking with this fish.
The recipe mentioned here is for frying the fish with rawa. If they are very small just marinate them and deep fry. They taste just awesome.
Ingredients:
10-20 Anchovies / Velli (in Konkani)
For Marination:
1 tsp red chili powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/4 tsp salt
For Coating:
2 tablespoon rawa
1 tablespoon rice flour
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp chili powder
1 tablespoon oil
Procedure:
Clean the fish carefully, by cutting off the head. De-scale them and clean the internals. Do not make small pieces, just cut the head and de-scale.
Marinate then with the ingredients meant for marination(check the ingredients section above) while still wet in water.
Now mix the ingredients meant for coating(check the coating section above). Coat each marinated fish.
Heat a frying pan and add oil. Once the oil gets slightly heated place the flour coated fish in the frying pan. Fry on both sides. This should normally take around 15 minutes.
