To all my friends who have an android phone, here is a good news for you. The popular North Indian chain of restaurants Mast Kalandar has launched an app called
MK Dabbawala. The best thing about this app is that they have daily changing menus with fresh and tasty food. The menus are hand picked by the chef at the restaurant and these dishes cost between Rs.80/- to Rs.150/- only.
I used this app to order food yesterday as I was too tired to cook after returning home from office and also had some guests visiting me. Since they serve authentic North Indian vegetarian food I thought of ordering food using their app. This was the first time that I ordered food using an app on my smart phone. So let me tell you more about the app and my experience and how to install the app and order food.
How to install the app?
Downloading the app is very simple. Just go to Google playstore/ios appstore, search for MK Dabbawala and click install. It will ask your permission to access files, click yes and proceed. It downloaded within few minutes on super fast wi-fi Internet.
Pre-Order steps:
Select the Manage Account by clicking on the 3 red lines at the top of the screen. Enter your phone number, email address and address. Save the settings.
How to order food?
Once the app has downloaded, click on it and you will be able to see a pop up which says order now.
Click order now. Select the dishes that you want by clicking on "+" sign. You can select as many dishes as you want.
You can even order desserts and drinks which is in another tab on the right hand side. There is no minimum order. You can select even one dish and checkout.
If you change your mind and want to change the menu, you can clear the cart and go back and reselect the dishes. "+" is for selecting dishes and "-" is for un-selecting them. Proceed to checkout. You have 2 payment modes i.e. Cash On Delivery(COD) or Card payment. Select your mode of payment, select your area and proceed.

Your order looks like this |
After placing an order you will get an SMS and an email that the order has been placed and the nearest Mast Kalandar restaurant where your order will be processed. The SMS says that your food will be delivered within 30 Min's. I did not want the food within 30 Min's, so I called them at the number mentioned in the app and informed that I want the order to be delivered after 2 hours for dinner time. Yes, The order arrived on time.
What all did I order?
The paneer tikka roll was just mind-blowing and we loved it. It was neatly wrapped in an aluminium foil.
We loved the sprouts salad which was loaded with fresh ingredients. The bhel was crispy and also had sweet corn added to it. It was served with sweet and spicy chutneys which were packed separately inside it.
The thali with paneer lababdaar was slightly on the sweeter side, but the dal makhani and chole was heavenly. The garlic naans were a huge hit at my home that evening.
For desserts we ordered these yummy balusha.
We all savored the food and my guests had a great time.
My Verdict:
- The select menu consisted of one type of salad, chat, snacks, combos, HP i.e. Halka phulka thali, another special thali, one drink and one type of sweet.
- The food was delivered fresh and hot in seal packed plastic "dabbas".
- The smaller combos were served in see through packs, however the bigger meals like Thalis or Aaj Ka HP were not served in see-through containers. They were packed in plastic containers and sealed with plastic sheets. There was no way to figure out what type of combo/meal it is without opening it. So I suggest them either to pack it in see through containers or to neatly label the dish with its name on top of the parcel. This will help to easily distribute the meal as per my guests choice.

- The drinks and desserts can be displayed on the menu page itself. There are chances that someone might skip ordering drinks and desserts if mentioned on a separate tab.
- Plastic spoons and tissue papers were provided with every dish.
- The food had a homely taste. It was not very oily nor loaded with spices. Just perfect.
- There might be some variation in the look of the food that is shown on the app and the food that is actually served.
- Packaging charges incur slightly extra cost and this was not properly mentioned on the app during checkout.
You can also order the food online from a laptop/desktop.
Overall,I had a good experience ordering the food from Mast Kalandar.
