Pear And Pomegranate Salad

I always ensure that my family eats healthy food. This makes me try and innovate new things in my kitchen. Last week I received a box of USA Pears for review. The box contained 2 varieties of pears namely Green Anjou – bright green colored with a soft red blush and Red Anjou – dark maroon in color. Pears are an excellent source of fiber which helps digestion, reduces cholesterol and hence reduces the risk of coronary heart diseases and type II diabetes. Also pears are an excellent source of vitamin C. They also aid in weight loss and weight management.


After reaching home from school, my daughter saw the box of pears and her hunger made her eat them right away. I did not stop her and I was happy that she ate one of the healthiest food. Consuming more pears increases satiety and helps reduce overall calorie intake.


Nowadays lots of pears are available in the nearby super store. When buying for pears, look for those that are firm, fragrant and unblemished. They will continue to ripen and develop their full flavor and juiciness after you buy them. Just by looking at them, you can’t judge whether they are ripe or not. Just press your thumb at the neck of the pear. If it has softened near the neck means if is perfect to eat.


Both the varieties of pears are yummy and juicy. While I loved the red ones more, my family loved green too. Green ones can be added to salads and hence I have come up with today’s recipe.


Ingredients:                                     Prep. Time: 10 Minutes, Serves: 2
1 pear
1/4 cup pomegranate seeds
1/2 cup torn or chopped lettuce
1/2 lemon juice
1/2 tsp black pepper powder

Procedure:
1) Wash, core and chop the pears into cubes.
2) Mix all the ingredients together.

Note: Serve it as a snack or have it for breakfast. You can even serve it with nachos or make it as a topping with canape.
